Arrival – Negombo

Negombo, once a quaint but busy fishing village, has turned into the 5th largest city in Sri Lanka. Due to its proximity to the airport, array of accommodation choices and laid- back beach vibe Negombo is the perfect starting point for any Sri Lankan holiday. We will pick you up from Bandaranaike airport for transportation to your beachside hotel. We meet our Royal Enfield motorbikes and go for a leisurely afternoon ride through Negombo. Enjoy a welcome dinner with the rest of the tour as we discuss our upcoming adventure.

Day One – 100km         Ride time – 2.5 hrs

Negombo – Kitulgala

Kitulgala

Today is a nice easy ride.  It’s a great way to get used to Sri Lankan conditions and our new motorbikes. We leave Negombo beach for a morning ride to Kitulgala. We are heading for the Kelani River where scenes were shot for the Academy Award winning movie “The Bridge On the River Kwai”.  Lush jungle and tropical fruit plantations line our route as we pass through one of the wettest parts of the country. Borderlands Adventure Camp awaits. Here, you can choose from a variety of afternoon activities including white water rafting and canyoning or just relax and watch the water slip by.

Day Two 162km         Ride time – 4.5 hrs

Kitulgala – Sigiriya

We head for the cultural triangle with a great motorbike ride through central Sri Lanka. We leave our lush jungle and head north skirting the tea plantations. We stop for lunch, visit an elephant orphanage, then ride on to Dambulla. The Cave Temples of Dambulla are a World Heritage Site that date back thousands of years and are a must see.  We continue our ride to Sigiriya and our luxurious accommodation affords us a glimpse of Lion Rock.

Day Three – 150km         Ride time – 4 hrs

Sigiriya – Nilaveli

An early start this morning as we ride to the Citadel of Sigiriya, the Lion Rock.  This is an UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can choose to wander the grounds admiring the frescos and water gardens or climb the 1200 steps to admire a view fit for a king.  After lunch, we leave the cultural centre behind and commence our motorcycle journey to the east coast.  We take on a new landscape heading for Nilaveli Beach, one of the finest beaches in Sri Lanka.

Day Four – 130km         Ride time – 3 hrs

Nilaveli – Pasikudah

Head for an early morning boat trip to Pigeon Island to do some exploring or book in a dive/snorkel. After breakfast, we pass through Trinco harbour and ride the coast road to Pasikudah Beach, a beautiful bay just north of Batticaloa, where we can relax at our luxurious beach-side resort for a two-night stay. Spend a relaxing afternoon in the crystal clear waters, enjoy a variety of water sports and soak up some sun.

Day Five Rest or Ride

Pasikudah Beach – Polonnaruwa – Pasikudah Beach

Relax by the beach, snorkel, scuba dive, laze by the pool and just chill for the day or head on a fantastic day trip to Polonnaruwa to discover some ancient ruins. We ride for just over an hour to reach our destination and spend some leisurely time roaming through the highlights of this ancient city.

Day Six – 194km         Ride time  5.5hrs

Pasikudah Beach – Kandy

Kandyday6

A great ride today as we leave the coast and head to the hills.  We ride through the Knuckles Range, twisting and turning past the Eighteen Bends on highway A26 and head for the Sacred Tooth Temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic-a tooth of the Buddha.

Day Seven – 212km       Ride time  5.5 hrs

Kandy – Arugum Bay

ArugumBay

This is one of my favourite motorcycle rides. We head back towards the East Coast for our overnight stay in Arugum Bay.  Surfers have been coming to Arugum Bay since the 60s and the town retains a laid-back surfer vibe.  We ride through lush jungle, rice paddies and natural bush on some great deserted roads. Keep your eyes peeled for wild elephants near Pottuvil.

Day Eight – 172km         Ride time  4.5 hrs

Arugum Bay – Yala National Park

We ride through natural jungle outlining Yala National Park as we head west, then south, arriving in the afternoon at our luxury accommodation in the heart of the Park.  Yala is renowned for its wildlife and has the highest population density of leopards in the world.  We are booked in for an early morning safari to take in the sights and sounds of Sri Lankan wildlife at its finest.

Day Nine – 137km         Ride time  3.5 hrs

Yala – Beragala

We start along the coast then head north through the lowlands heading for the hills and tea country. Our meandering ride affords us a closer look at some Sri Lankan tea and Lipton’s seat.  We stay at a beautiful resort in Beragala for two nights.  Enjoy the glorious view at sunset with a cocktail at the bar.

Day Ten Rest or Ride

Beragala – Horton Plains – Beragala

Relax and enjoy the amenities of our resort or head out on a day trip riding through Horton Plains National Park.  We go off the beaten track and get some dirt in our tyres as we weave our way through hillside villages to Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall. (Bambarakanda Falls).  A pleasant hike takes us to the spectacular World’s End Drop, a perfect photo opportunity.

Day Eleven – 184km        Ride time  5hrs

Beragala – Weligama

Refreshed, we make our way south to the beautiful bay of Weligama.  Combining a series of deserted B roads we snake our way through coconut and banana plantations, numerous fruit and vegetable stalls, and head for the beach.  Enjoy an afternoon surf perfect for beginners or wash down some seafood delicacies with an ice-cold beer at the beach.

Day Twelve – 92km         Ride time  2.5 hrs

Weligama – Bentota

Making our way to Bentota, we ride along the coast road to the city of Galle and its time-warped Old Dutch Fort.  This is colonial Sri Lanka at its most perfectly preserved. Relax in town with a coffee and stroll the historic Fort area with its many boutique shops, cafes and artists.  Back on our bikes we tackle the remaining distance to Bentota and enjoy a well-deserved rest at our overnight accommodation.

Day Thirteen – 90km        Ride time  3hrs

Bentota – Colombo

Our last days ride. We leave the coast and head inland to avoid most of the traffic. We stop for lunch at the famous Mt Lavinia Hotel. Built originally as a Governor’s residence it was used as a British Army Hospital in WWII and also featured in the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.  We test our Sri Lankan riding skills as we enter Colombo.  Our final overnight pit stop awaits. We share a farewell dinner and try our luck at one of the many casinos.  Airport transfers are offered the next morning.
