pic-1

Negombo, once a quaint but busy fishing village, has turned into the 5th largest city in Sri Lanka.  Due to its proximity to the airport, array of accommodation choices and laid-back beach vibe, Negombo is the perfect starting point for any Sri Lankan holiday.  We will pick you up from Bandaranaike airport for transportation to your beachside hotel.  We meet our Royal Enfield Motorcycles and go for a leisurely afternoon ride through Negombo. Enjoy a welcome dinner with the rest of the tour as we discuss our upcoming adventure.

Day One – 170km         Ride time 4 hrs

Negombo – Anuradhapura

Classic Sri Lankan motorbike riding today. We leave Negombo beach following a north easterly path. We pass endless villages, smelling the spices of Sri Lanka and ride through coconut plantations, rice paddies and natural bush land.  Buddhist Temples and Hindu Kovils dot the landscape towards Anuradhapura, the sacred city.  This city was built around a cutting from the “Tree of Enlightenment”-the Buddha’s fig tree, which was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century.  Anuradhapura flourished for 1300 years before being abandoned.  Now is our chance to explore this splendid site; its palaces, monasteries and monuments.

Day Two – 100km         Ride time  2.5hrs

Anuradhapura – Sigiriya

We combine some highway riding today with some deserted B roads skirting the massive Nachchaduwa tank as we make our way to Dambulla and the impressive Golden Temple.  Pilgrimages have been made to this cave monastery for thousands of years.  The complex comprises five sanctuaries with exquisite murals and over 150 statues.  We ride on to Sigiriya and our accommodation for two nights.

Day Three – 120 km        Ride time  3hrs

Sigiriya – Minneriya National Park – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya

We head on a day trip to Minneriya National Park and Polonnaruwa.  Minneriya is renowned for “The Gathering”.   During the dry season every year hundreds of elephants gather on the shores of an ancient reservoir built by a king.  We join a safari which guarantees an elephant sighting.   We head east where a beautiful 40 minute ride finds us at Polonnaruwa – another ancient city and World Heritage site.  We spend some time admiring the Brahman monuments and the fabulous garden city ruins before returning to Sigiriya.

Day Four – 110 km         Ride time  3hrs

Sigiriya – Kandy

An early start this morning as we ride to the Citadel of Sigiriya, the Lion Rock. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can choose to wander the grounds admiring the fresco’s and the water gardens or climb the 1200 steps to admire a view fit for a king.  Back on our bikes, we head south through the centre of Sri Lanka and into the spectacular hill country.  We meander through a landscape littered with rice paddies, natural jungle and some great motorbike roads as we sit back and let Sri Lanka roll by.  Nearing Kandy, we absorb the sights and sounds of Sri Lanka’s second largest city.  Before heading to our overnight accommodation we visit Kandy’s sacred city and the Temple of the Tooth, Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic.

Day Five – 120km       Ride time  4hrs

Kandy – Corbet’s Gap – Kandy

Enjoy a Motorcycle ride to Corbet’s Gap in the Knuckles Range.  We ride east from Kandy then head north, snaking our way up through hillside villages.  As we continue to climb, the road affords us spectacular views at every turn, culminating in a great view of the Knuckles Range at Corbet’s Gap.

Day six – 85km         Ride time  3hrs

Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

This is a great day to be on a motorbike!  We leave Kandy heading south for Nuwara Eliya, commonly known as “Little England”.  We twist and turn our way through the countryside trying to find a piece of straight road.  We tour a famous tea factory and stop for a cuppa.  In the afternoon we ride to our Nuwara Eliya accommodation and have a pint at an English pub.

Day Seven – 85km         Ride time  2.5hrs

Nuwara Eliya – Kitulgala

Kitulgala

We head west today riding through the stunning tea plantations.  We are heading for the Kelani River where scenes were shot for the Academy Award winning movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.  This lush jungle setting is where we will spend an action packed afternoon.  You can choose white water rafting, canyoning or a variety of other activities.

Day Eight – 100km         Ride time  3hrs

Kitulgala – Negombo

Our final days ride on tour today as we head back to Negombo Beach.  We say goodbye to the Kelani River and set a leisurely pace through the jungle, arriving around lunchtime in Negombo for a farewell lunch at the best local restaurant in town.
